IKE ROBIN
Gents,
Grant and Bev Sheean called in to visit Anne and I on Tuedsday and over a cuppa, Grant told me that he was at Ike's 70th birthday bash recently. Grant then told me that Ike has been given 3 to 6 months, as he has lung cancer. He had to be give a double dose of radiation to enable him to attend the party. There were over a hundred people at the do.
Grant said he's looking good - just as he always has, but when you put your hand on his shoulder youcould feel the bone where there used to be muscle. And if we recall, Ike had pretty muscular shoulders.
I rang the numbers I have here and left a message but have not had a return call as yet. I've sent Jack the numbers I have via email. Hopefully the numbers have not changed.
It was shocking news and took my breath right away - we are in fact blood brothers, having done the nick to the wrists and mingling thing before we flew back for our 2nd tour. He has a very special place in my heart as he does in the hearts of many of our bretheren. My two boys worship him.
I guess all we can do, is hope and pray.
Regards,
Noel Mc Laughlin

Just to let all know.
Ike was admitted to St Andrews Hospital ICU Toowoomba on Sat.
Information today from Dan Handley is that, Ike is resting and is comfortable in a private room at St Andrews Nth Ward wing.
The Doctor there has given Ike 3-7 days because of the extreme advanced stage of his cancer.
Regards to all
Stay strong.
Max
Go in peace Ike you are a great soldier and a great man!

Sad to hear that IKe's not doing so well. But by hell he did allright up till now, I can recall many memorable moments (day's, weeks) with Ike as I am sure a lot of us can and it those moments that will stay with me forever.
On Ya Ike.
Murray Clarke.
Like John I also have fond memories of Ike in B3 in the 70's. There were many informative, and funny, sessions in the back of vehicles. He had a great way of making newbies feel at ease. Will keep him in my prays.

Thanks for that Noel, it certainly is sad news.
I was lucky enough to serve with Ike in Townsville in the mid 70's.
These are the only pictures I have (excuse the quality) but if anyone else out there has photos of Ike or others please send them to me for uploading and sharing.

An incident involving Ike in Vietnam
Description:
An M113A1 Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) of A Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, Royal Australian Armoured Corps, (RAAC), with the call sign one one Alpha (11A). Crewed by 219002 Ike Ihaia Robin (vehicle commander) and 5717522 Trooper Kevin Raymond Brakewell (driver), this vehicle was leading a column of APCs through a lane in a rubber plantation in the north of the province on 27 September 1971 when it struck a mine. The blast tore away the drive sprocket, the first set of roadwheels on both sides and a large section of track on the starboard side. The differential was shattered and the engine and transmission mountings were broken. The blast also caused a large section of the hull to be pushed in by nine inches. Fortunately, the interior was not penetrated and the crewmen suffered a bruised back with torn ligaments and a broken nose respectively. This particular vehicle (134357) had been previously fitted with a T50 steel turret and was up armoured with belly and sponson armour, improvements which undoutedly saved the crew from death or more serious injury. The vehicle was returned to Australia where it was stripped of fittings, written off and sold for scrap.

Was talking to Humph (Roger Humphreys) a few days back and he was going to arrange for both of us to head up the range to see Ike. Wait out.
If anyone is in the vicinity of Springwood Qld on the 25th let me know and you can join Humph, JC and me in increasing the average IQ of the local RSL. Plenty of "fellowship" (free) afterwards too.
